본 논문은 헤겔 철학에 대한 대표적인 고정적인 관념의 주된 내용들을 서술하고, 이것들이 참다운 학적 근거를 갖고 있는가를 해명하고자 한다. 특히 이 글에서 주목하는 것은 칼 포퍼의 헤겔 비판의 타당성 여부이다. 포퍼는 헤겔 철학에 대한 오랜 비판을 반복하는 것에 그치지 않고, 헤겔을 독일 나치즘의 인종주의 및 전체주의의 사상적 선구자로 평가함으로써 기존의 편견을 한층 더 강화시키고 있다. 헤겔 철학에 대한 여러 고정적인 편견과 오해를 칼 포퍼의 헤겔 비판을 중심으로 살펴보는 작업은 학문적으로 탐구하는 작업은 헤겔 실천철학의 본질적 특성이 무엇인가에 대한 물음과 연결되어 있다. 그러므로 본 논문은 헤겔의 사회정치 철학에 대한 대표적인 비판들의 정당성 여부를 검토하는 과정에서 간접적으로 헤겔의 실천철학의 고유한 특성이 무엇인가를 입증해 보이는 전략을 취한다. 구체적으로 필자는 우선 헤겔의 사회정치철학이 1820년대의 소위 복고적 내지 반동적 독일 현실을 철학적으로 정당화하는 이데올로기이라는 전통적인 고정관념들의 내용을 비판적으로 서술한다. 그 후에 필자는 포퍼의 헤겔 비판이 얼마나 정당한가를 세 부분으로 나누어 고찰한다. 우선 헤겔이 프로이센의 반동적 철학자이자 도덕적인 실증론자로서 강자와 승자의 논리를 철학적으로 정당화하는 과제를 수행하는 사상가라는 포퍼의 입장을 고찰한다. 다음으로 다루어지는 주제는 헤겔과 독일 민족주의 사이의 연관성에 대한 문제이다. 마지막으로 필자는 헤겔이 전체주의 사상가이라는 포퍼의 주된 논점을 비판적으로 검토한다. 포퍼의 헤겔 비판의 타당성을 비판적으로 검토하는 과정에서 필자는 헤겔이 그의 사회정치철학에서 자유와 평등이라는 프랑스 혁명의 이념을 그 철학적 기초로 받아들이고 있을 뿐 아니라, 독일적인 현실을 개혁할 자유주의적인 근대 국가 이론을 제공하고자 노력하는 사상가이었다는 점을 입증하고자 시도한다.
Abstract
In this Article I will try to propose a critique of the orthodox or stereotypical attack, which has depicted Hegel as an apologist for the conservative and reactionary Prussian State and a prophet of what is often called statism. Karl Popper has repeated this stereotypical critique of Hegel in The open Society and Its enemies. In addition Popper has painted Hegel in the darkest colors as a proto-Nazi and an enemy of an ‘open society’. Therefore my study should re-examine whether Karl Popper's attack on Hegel's social and political philosophy is based on good arguments or not. In my article I treat three themes, namely ‘Hegel and the moral positivist’, ‘Hegel and the German nationalism’, and ‘Hegel and the totalitarianism’ with regard to Popper's fierce attack on Hegel. In the process of this reexamination about the validity of Popper's critical assessments of Hegel's social and political philosophy I undertake to defend Hegel against not only the traditional charge that he was a reactionary thinker, a supporter absolutism, but also Popper's new charge that he was a forerunner of Nazi and an enemy of an ‘open society’. It is impossible to deny, on the evidence of Hegel's Philosophy of Right and his other important political works, that he belonged to a constitutionalist or liberal current of political thought. In this article I try to show that Hegel regarded the human rights and constitutional protection of individual freedom as a mark of a rational constitution and a necessary condition of the modern state. As a result I hope that my article can contribute to the rejection of the traditional misunderstanding of Hegel's political philosophy.
