디지털 매체의 등장은 실재, 진리, 보편적인 인간 본성 등의 개념에 대한 철학적 질문을 촉발시켰다. 이 글의 기본적인 문제제기는 디지털 매체를 통해 만들어진 세계가 자연세계에 비해 존재론적으로 동등한 것인가 아닌가 하는 물음 및 진리를 인식할 수 있는 주체로서의 인간 본성 등을 둘러싼 논의의 개념적 지형이 새로운 철학적 논의를 담고 있는가 하는 것이다. 로티와 브랜덤과 같은 반표상주의자의 입장에서 최근의 논의를 바라본다면, 실재와 인간본성을 둘러싸고 벌어지는 논의 자체가 매우 진부한 것으로 여겨진다. 즉, 반표상주의자의 입장에서는 처음부터 표상 또는 재현해야 할 무엇이 존재한다고 전제하는 데서 시작하는 철학적 물음은 오래된 플라톤주의적인 논의를 반복하는 것에 불과한 것으로 보이는 것이다. 디지털 매체의 등장은 우리의 세계를 변화시킨 것이라기보다는 대상의 실재성에 대한 물음을 던지게 한 하나의 사건일 뿐이며, 반표상주의적인 관점을 그럴듯하게 보이게 하는 사례에 불과할 뿐이다. 이것은 다시 말하면 가상 현실과 물리적 실재간의 존재론적 우위를 따지는 작업은 본질과 현상의 차이를 논하는 것만큼이나 유용하지 않다는 것이다. 오늘날의 철학적 상황은 우리에게 두 가지 과제를 제시한다. 우리는 한편으로는 존재의 우연성을 극복해 나가면서 스스로의 존재의미에 관한 물음에 답해야 하며, 다른 한편으로는 그와 같은 철학적 물음의 다양성을 확보해 나갈 수 있는 사회적 조건을 논구해야 한다. 디지털 매체의 등장에 수반되는 인간본성의 부정은 철학이나 사회의 도덕적, 문화적 진보를 부정하는 것으로 이해되어서는 안 되며, 사적인 자율성과 공적인 연대에 관한 철학적 물음을 제기할 것을 요구하고 있는 것으로 보아야 한다. 이 글에서는 디지털 매체의 등장으로 촉발된 실재 및 인간관에 대한 물음이 형이상학적인 논의로 회귀되어서는 안 되며, 그것이 우리의 실천 영역을 어떻게 확장시킬 것인가 하는 문제에 초점을 맞추어야 한다는 관점을 로티와 브랜덤의 입장을 통해 주장해 보았다.
Abstract
The advent of digital media makes philosophers to ask such questions as “what is the real?”, or “what does it mean to be true?”, or “what is the common nature of human being?”. In this paper, I have asked if such questions contain any novel idea which deserves to be discussed, or if they repeat only the old platonic questions. From the point of view of anti-representationalists such as Rorty and Brandom, recent philosophical discussions around digital media seem banal, because they looks like presuppose platonic idea that there is something out there which is to be represented. I guess, the advent of digital media does not make us live in a new life-world, in which the reality has been lost, but it just one of marks which make us ask the objectivity of the world. As the long discussion about the reality since plato has not let us have some definite idea of reality, the questions about the reality of the hyper-real would not produce any productive consequences. So I propose to alter the questions such as what the real is to what kind of practice could be done with new technology. Current situation give us two tasks. First we should face contingency of our life and try to get some answer about the meaning of existence. And we should discuss the social conditions in which the maximum diversity of the answers could be guaranteed. In this paper, I have claimed that the philosophical questions about the reality of hyper-real should not bring us back to the old metaphysical questions, but the pragmatic approach of Rorty and Brandom's would be more plausible to this matter.
