Abstract

This Article is written to reconsider the universalism in 20th century as to overcome it critically and recreate a way of thinking and experiencing ‘the political.’ An universalism has been accomplished during 20th century by transforming man into universal human and political communities into sovereign-nation states. Although this universalism presupposes homogeneity and equality of human beings and nations states, brutal exclusion and asymmetrical relations between nation states have never been overcome. To rethink this problem, in this article, I focused on Carl Schmitt’s theory of ‘the political’ which had criticized universalism after WWI in Europe. It is well known that Schmitt defined ‘the political’ as antagonism between friend and enemy by which he raised objection against universalism that had been main political argument of Anglo-Saxons who won the WWI. Schmitt’s strategy to redeem the traditional European political order was, thus, to re-strengthen sovereignty that could define who was enemy to it and by this the universalism of Anglo-Saxons could be overcome. Leo Strauss appropriated Schmitt’s theory into his moral philosophy by internalizing enemy in human mind. In so doing, Strauss tried to establish moral principle that could deconstruct the universalism of modern age. Schmitt and Strauss, therefore, thought of the universalism of 20th century as erasing enemy in both politics and morality. Freud, however, found enemy in different way in the age of universalism by positioning enemy in the prehistoric age. In his endeavor, he could conceive the civilized world in which brutal battle or political antagonism disappear. So it could be said that Freud gave enemy his porper place in the age of universalism in the context of colonialism that presupposed progress from the savage to the civilized by erasing the figure of enemy in present world.
