Abstract

Lâu Tsí-Û(劉芷妤)’s dystopian novel “Joyland Above”(樂土在上) was serialized and published coinciding with Taiwan's social movement “Bluebird Action,” making the book not only a piece of popular fiction but also an allegorical self-examination of contemporary Taiwanese society: facing China's pressure and contemplating Taiwan's possible future and responses. This article first analyzes the two narrative timelines of past and near-future in the novel, highlighting that Joyland is a perpetually ongoing apocalypse. It then discusses the spatial settings of Joyland, illustrating its parallels with reality, where the social system aligns with China's digital governance. Furthermore, the article focuses on the linguistic norms within Joyland, where the use of derogatory terms and character names based on radicals reveal class divisions, identity, and value transformations. The switching between Taiwanese and Mandarin Chinese establishes connections between humans and animals, plants, and objects through phonetics, while the interplay of character forms and sounds reflects Taiwan's multilingual and multicultural social reality, a topic explored in Sinophone studies. Finally, through the analysis of time, space, and language, the article elucidates the “Taiwan heterotopia” in “Joyland Above,” where the function of resistance is not rooted in political or ideological binary oppositions; love is the driving force behind everything.
