Abstract
In lieu of the rising importance of Korean neologism education in Korean language learning, this study attempts to analytically suggest a set of criteria and methods for selecting neologism formation units to help learners infer the meanings of new words on their own. Neologism formation units refer to affixes, roots, and splinters that contribute to the creation of neologisms. Based on a collection of Korean neologisms accumulated over 12 years, this study analyzes their productivity and corpus-based frequency to propose a method for selecting educationally useful units. Units showing consistent and high productivity were first selected, and then corpus frequency was presented as a secondary criterion for final selection. This approach is intended to help learners better understand and acquire neologisms encountered in real-life Korean language use. The study serves as a foundational resource for developing instructional models and setting a concrete direction for neologism education in Korean language teaching.
