Abstract

The Present and Past of the Study of Korean Word FormationHa Chi-Gun(Dong-A Univ.)Korean word formation has been studied over a century from Jusi-gyeog to the present. The goal of this study is to comprehensively summarize the process of the study of Korean word formation and establish the legitimacy of Korean word formation through the succession and expansion of it. The feature of Ju Si-gyeong's word formation is that in establishing word, he applied the analytic criterion but he didn't distinguish between the syntactic level and the word formational level with a synthetic viewpoint. On the other hand, Choi Hyeon-bae studied it in the opposite way. Heo Ung defined derivation and inflection based on the criterion of the structural-descriptive grammar, not in the traditional way of the study relying on the linguistic intuition.In the end of 1970's, after the generative morphology was introduced, the study of word formation on the basis of classification and analysis turned to the generative study and concentrated on the rule based study for the word formation. The trend of the study of generative morphology is divided into the position of the weak lexicalist hypothesis and the strong lexicalist hypothesis. After the cognitive grammar was introduced, the analogy theory and principle of generic objectification based on this theory appeared. In analogy theory, new words stored in the lexicon are based on a similar point of the lexical item and made from the process of the analogical reasoning. The principle of generic objectification explains the process of the word formation in the basis of the lexicalization of the phrases for overcoming the limit of the rule theory and analogy theory.
