Abstract
More than 50 years after its publication, John Rawls’s A Theory of Justice (first edition 1971, revised edition 1999) continues to inspire new philosophical imaginations as a foundation for scholarship in the fields of political philosophy and ethics. More recently, the debate has centered on what a theory of justice should look like in a neoliberal capitalist context of rapid economic development and growing inequality. In Free Market Fairness (2012), John Tomasi suggests a research program of market democracy, which is a sincere attempt to combine appealing ideas from two great liberal traditions, a free market tradition such as classical liberalism and libertarianism and a democratic tradition such as high-liberalism. In order to demonstrate the power of market democratic approach, Tomasi offers a market democratic interpretation of Rawls’s justice as fairness. This paper aims to critically examine Tomasi’s market democratic interpretation of Rawls’s theory of justice. Tomasi argues that a market democratic interpretation of Rawls’s justice, which more actively includes economic liberty, is consistent with Rawls’s theory of justice, and that this interpretation is suitable for the reality of economic development. This paper will analyze what Tomasi’s interpretation is (Section 2) and critically examine it (Section 3). I will argue that Tomasi’s responsible self-author, which his interpretation is based on, is atomistic and individual, and conflicts with Rawls’s accounts of person, society, and self-respect, which are based on sociality in a thick conception. This discussion will contribute to a rethinking of the meaning and value of economic liberty in Rawls’s justice, and thus to the search for a theory of justice for our time.
