Abstract

As many Korean people recognize that the essence of social justice is fairness, they pay special attention to Rawls’ theory of justice as fairness and meritocracy. So many Korean scholars of different fields have discussed whether these theories are adequate theories of fair distribution. Regarding Rawls’ theory, many scholars have argued that it is an adequate theory, but many scholars have disagreed and raised two criticisms against Rawls’ theory. First, Rawls’ theory cannot secure the integrity of an individuals because his theory is based upon his idiosyncratic intuition that talented people’s talents are socially owned “common asset” so that it cannot secure the integrity of an individuals. Second. Rawls’ theory cannot accept economic desert because Rawls holds that distribution based upon natural talents is morally arbitrary. Meritocracy claims that jobs, offices, etc. should be distributed on people’s abilities and the rewards for the jobs and offices, etc. should be proportionally unequal to people’s abilities. Regarding meritocracy, many scholars have argued that it is an adequate theory, but many scholars have disagreed and raised criticism that it allows unfair economic inequality for many people. So critics suggest that an adequate meritocracy should regulate economic inequalities through Raw’s principles of justice. Critically developing these arguments, I reply to the two arguments against Rawls’ theory so that I can defend Rawls’ theory. Also I argue that an adequate form of meritocracy distributes jobs, offices, etc. on ability, but regulates rewards in order to reduce economic inequality. And finally I argue that Rawls theory of justice as fairness accommodates this kind of meritocracy so that it is an adequate theory of fair distribution.
