인정투쟁에서 호네트는 사회 비판이론의 규범적 토대로서 인정 개념을 제시한다. 호네트가 제시하는 인정 개념은 경험적이면서 동시에 이념적인 것으로, 사회에 대한 내재적 비판을 가능하게 하는 기초이자 사회가 도덕적 진보의 방향으로 나아갈 수 있게 해주는 기준이다. 그런데 인정 개념을 경험적이면서 동시에 이념적인 것으로 제시하려는 시도는 어떤 난점에 부딪히게 되는 것 같다. 만일 인정에 대한 이상적 “이념”이 현실의 사회적 관계에 대한 경험을 바탕으로 자리 잡은 것이라고 한다면, 그리고 현존하는 해석적 지평 안에서만 “인정”이 갖는 의미가 이해될 수 있는 것이라면, 현실의 부조리한 사회적 관계를 정당화하는 데 이용될 위험이 있기 때문이다. 이러한 위험을 피하려면 인정 개념이 갖는 규범적 성격을 보다 명확하게 밝힐 필요가 있다. 본 논문은 다월의 2인칭 도덕이론에 기대어 인정 개념의 규범적 성격을 해명하고자 한다. 다월의 2인칭 도덕에서 핵심 개념인 2인칭 인정-존중은 규범의 당위성이 어떤 토대에서 정당화될 수 있는지에 대한 논의를 제공하기 때문이다. 당위에 대한 정당화는 경험에만 기대어서 이루어져서는 안 된다. 이러한 논의를 위해 먼저 다월의 2인칭 도덕이론과 호네트의 인정이론을 간략하게 개괄한다(2). 그리고 인정 개념을 둘러싼 다월과 호네트의 논쟁에서 주요 쟁점이 무엇이었는지 정리한다(3). 그리고 호네트가 비판한 것처럼 다월이 인정 개념을 2인칭 도덕으로 축소하고 있는지, 다월이 주장하는 것처럼 인정 개념과 2인칭 도덕이 연결될 수 있는지 비판적으로 검토한다(4). 마지막으로 인정 개념이 호네트가 주장하는 것처럼 내재적 초월을 가능하게 하는 규범적 토대로서 정당화될 수 있으려면 인정 개념의 규범적 성격을 2인칭 도덕과 연결해서 이해할 필요가 있음을 주장한다(5).
Abstract
In The Struggle for Recognition, Honneth presents the concept of recognition as the normative foundation of social critical theory. His concept of recognition is both empirical and ideological: it is the basis for an immanent critique of society and the standard by which society can move in the direction of moral progress. However, the attempt to present the concept of recognition as both empirical and ideological seems to run into a certain difficulty. If the ideal “ideology” of recognition is established based on the experience of real social relations, and if the meaning of “recognition” can only be understood within the existing interpretive horizon, then there is a danger that it will be used to justify unjust social relations in reality. To avoid this problem, it is necessary to clarify the normativity of the concept of recognition. This paper seeks to elucidate the normativity of the concept of recognition by relying on Darwall’s theory of second-person morality. This is because second-person recognition-respect, a key concept in Darwall’s second-person morality, provides a discussion on the basis on which normative justifiability can be justified. The justification of normative justifiability should not be done based solely on experience. For this discussion, we first briefly outline Darwall’s second-person moral theory and Hornet’s theory of recognition(2). It then summarizes the main issues in the debate between Darwall and Honneth over the concept of recognition(3). And it critically examines whether Darwall is reducing the concept of recognition to second-person morality as criticized by Honneth, and whether the concept of recognition and second-person morality can be connected as argued by Darwall(4). Finally, I argue that if the concept of recognition is to be justified as the normative basis for enabling immanent transcendental, as Honneth argues, we need to understand its normative character in connection with second-person morality(5).
