Abstract

This study is a study on the -었었- tenses among the Korean grammar tense categories. Among the various categories of Korean grammar, the tense category has not yet been clearly organized. In particular, the -었었- tense is still controversial even in the tense category. As a research method, in 862 university student articles, students who wrote the -었었- tense and students who did not write the -었었- tense were first shared, and in 455 (53%) students who wrote the -었었- tense, the characteristics of the -었었- tense were classified into recollection 1 and 2, experience, the pluperfect tense. And I thought about where the -었었- tenses in the students’ writings came from. The research content of this paper found the origin of why some verbs use the -었었- tense, while mainly using the past tense (-었-) when writing something in the past. It can be seen that it was a matter of Korean's unique view of time, that is, subject and time. In particular, there were clues to the consideration of movement and an analysis of time that discussed ‘time’ in Nāgārjuna’s The Treatise in the Middle. This study begins, and we look forward to reviewing the concept of Western grammar in Korean grammar once again, and to the correct establishment of the Korean tense.
