Abstract

The background and purpose of this study is to examine Spinoza’s influence on the contemporary philosophy of mind, and thus Spinoza’s identity theory is the origin of the non-reductive monism. Research method and contents are to research Davidson’s anomalous monism and Nagel’s panpsychism in order to find Spinoza’s influence and contribution to the contemporary philosophy. According to the results of the study, The fact that Davidson and Negal claim not only the identity between the mind and the body, but also the irreducibility of the mind to the body leads to a practical connection with Spinoza. Thus we should pay attention to the fact that Spinoza is the pioneer of the non-deductive monism, and thus the origin of Davidson’s and Negal’s version of identity between the mind and the body is Spinoza’s identity theory. The conclusion and implications of this study are that the development in anomalous monism, comtemporary versions of Negal’s panpsychism followed stream of Spinoza’s identity theory, and therefore Spinoza’s mind-body theory contributes to the mind-body problem as a classical theory and provides a path to solving it today. The work of comparing and studying other forms of monism, such as neutral monism and psychophysical supervenience theory, not covered in this study, with Spinoza’s mind-body theory is a follow-up research task in the future.
