Abstract
This article aims to analyze Padak, an animation featuring anthromorphosed fish. In order to analyze the ways the fish struggle in reaction to the suppressive dominant structure, theories by Foucalt and Douglas were mainly employed. Called padapadak, a mackerel caught in a sea is put into a fish tank of a raw fish restaurant, which is a microcosm of human society. As a dominant figure, an old flatfish with eyes on the same side is representative of conservative ideas, submissive to the oppressive dominant structure. The absurd judgment upon the answers to quiz given by the flatfish discloses the way absolute power of dictatorship is violently exerted. Opposed to the negation of freedom by the flatfish obsessed with self-surveillance, the mackerel dreams of escaping into the sea, yet fails. Ironically, the flatfish inspired by the mackerel succeeds in escaping from it. The ending song delivers the message of pursuing freedom. The work satirizes the contemporary Korean society, where the vestiges of dictatorship remain in daily lives.
