초록
This study aims to verify the use of gender-inclusive terms in job titles to prevent gender discrimination. The gender-inclusive, male and female-representing terms are investigated through the recent data in COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) by eight genres and three types of gender-inclusive terms. As a result, new expressions for a gender-inclusive term like ‘flight attendant’ are widely used. When the suffix of a gender-inclusive term was replaced with a new word such as ‘firefighter’, gender-inclusive terms have been socially settled. However, when the suffix of a gender-inclusive term was changed with ‘-person’, male-representing terms are still used a lot. Gender-representing terms are used more in TV/movies subtitles and fiction. To establish the use of gender-inclusive terms, more accessible alternative terms are necessary and the attention of language users is required.
