초록
The masculine form is used as a generic term to refer not only to men, but to people of unspecified sex or whose sex is irrelevant, to human beings in general. Although English can generally be viewed as gender unmarked for nouns, some gender marked nouns like fireman and chairman do exist in English. The masculine generics have come under attack in recent decades for being sexist, harmful to women, and making women invisible because of stimulating a male biased mental representation. Due to advocates’ efforts to create gender-neutral language in English, gender marked nouns have been replaced by different alternatives, or pronouns used as generic meaning have been replaced by splitting forms(he or she) or they. In this paper, I review some arguments associated with sexist male generics and consider educational roles as a facilitator to abolish them. Especially in Korea, a textbook writer plays the most important role to promote the use of these nonsexist alternatives because Korean students don’t use English as a native language, they just learn it as a second language.
