초록

This study aims to examine Korean middle school English textbooks in order to find out whether and to what extent gender biases/stereotypes and inequities are manifested in EFL textbooks. Following a review of research on gender representation in EFL materials, a corpus-based lexical analysis was conducted on word frequencies regarding gender represenation in textbooks. For this study, a corpus was built out of 15 English textbooks of 7th National Curriculum used in the first year middle school in Korea. The study focused on the numerical differences of male-female related terms, occupational visibility, adjectives, conversation initiators, and major characters in reading passages. The findings are then summarized and analyzed, and finally based on these findings, some pedagogical suggestions are proposed.
