Abstract

Through the 2nd Sijo Renaissance Campaign to revive the Sijo in the 1920s and 1950s, the Modern Sijo, which continues to exist until now, tried to shift from the Sijochang, which was a KoSijo and music genre, to a new literary genre, the Modern Sijo. Among them, the Sijo of the liberation period from 1945 to 1959 developed in the following aspects. First, the progenitors of the liberation period were first electrified in two directions, popularity and musicality, centering on the main KoSijo. In order to enlighten the public, intellectuals and writers published anthologies and textbooks in Korean, focusing on the KoSijo that can be easily memorized and familiar to the public. At this time, the progenitor of the liberation period actively utilized the musicality of the progenitor to educate Hangul for the purpose of enlightenment. Second, Lee Ho-woo saw that the Sijo had universality as a 'people's poem' that breathes with the people in reality and daily life regardless of a specific ideology. However, the Sijo as a people's poem at this time is not a method that transcends or insensitive to real problems. Lee Ho-woo tried to present a Modern Sijo with universality that is not bound by the Modern Sijo and ruling ideology as a literary genre that accompanies the people's life of the country to be rebuilt. Third, Lee Tae-kuk suggested a negative ratio of the Sijo based on ethnicity and legitimacy for competition with free poetry, and suggested a hierarchy between free poetry and the Sijo for coexistence. However, contradictingly, Lee Tae-kuk emphasizes the musicality of the Sijo for the revival of the Sijo. It tries to spread the Modern Sijo to the general public because it viewed musicality as the most efficient element. In this way, in the process of canonizing the Sijo during the liberation period, Kosijo, not the Modern Sijo, and Lee Tae-kuk, who led the second Sijo Revival Movement, returned to the musicality of the Sijochang. Through two Sijo Revival movements, the Modern Sijo tried to separate from KoSijo and Kosijo's musicality, but they could not be separated.
