Abstract
The study of the allegorical aspects of modernist texts from the 1930s, including this paper, is an attempt to concretize the differences from vulgar modernity and artistic self-consciousness that appear in the artist novels of Lee-Sang and Park Tae-won. Accordingly, this paper discussed the allegory of the (im)possible happiness of depressed artists appearing in Park Tae-won's Geum-hong series novels based on Kim So-woon's memoir of Geum-hong. The core element of the character of Geum-hong presented in 「Love Desire(애욕)」 and 「Report(보고)」 is that it is allegorized in the ambivalence between vulgar modernity and peripheral modernity. It is difficult to understand Lee-Sang and Park Tae-won's private life novels as a superficial love story or a narrative of failed love. Their artist novels can be understood as texts that allegorize the (im)possible happiness and artistic self-consciousness of depressed artists through a love story. In this respect, the figures of Mr. Choi (Lee-Sang) and Jeong-Ja (Geum-Hong) who are ‘not tainted by dirt’ presented in Park Tae-won’s 「Report(보고)」 should be interpreted as idealistic and value-oriented figures pursued by the peripheral modernity of artist and gi-saeng (기생). The interpretation of 「Report(보고)」 from the perspective of an artist's novel can lead to a new interpretation of Lee-Sang’ 「Bongbyeolgi(봉별기)」
