조선시대 향촌사회와 서원이 밀접한 관련이 있음을 전제로, 조선후기 향촌질서가 변화하였는데, 변화하는 현실에 대한 향촌 사족들의 대응이 서원 건립을 통해서 나타났다. 즉 사족들은 서원건립을 통하여 중앙의 벌열이나 당파와 연결되기도 하고, 이용당하기도 하며, 서원건립에 문중의 힘을 결집하여 위협을 방어하기도 하고, 서원을 통해 지위를 보강, 확보하고자 하였다. 이는 서원조직이 바로 그런 지방세력 의 한 거점이었음을 말해주는 것이며, 鄕案秩序의 와해와 書院 남설 경향이 겹쳐서 나타나는 현상도 결코 우연은 아니었던 것이다. 그리고 이 같은 배경 속에 나타난 18세기 후반 이후의 서원 남설에는 서원조직의 「문중화」라는 새로운 경향으로 특징지워져 나타났다. 동족마을을 포함하여 족계의 창립이나 기타 문중조직을 통하여 이루어진 門中結束力의 강화는, 궁극적으로 보면 그 결집된 힘을 향촌사회 구조상에 투영함으로써 자신들의 사회적인 지위를 인정받기 위한 준비이자 수단이기도 하였다. 그리고 그 같은 필요를 내용적으로 가장 온전하게 반영하면서, 향촌사회구조 속에서 「私的 門中組織」이 「公的인 社會組織」으로 기능할 수 있는 매개로 서원조직은 매우 적절하고 유용한 것이었다. 특히 서원․사우의 건립과 이를 통한 가문의 결속, 선조의 追崇은 다른 어느 활동보다도 주목되었다고 볼 때 “관련 문중세력의 이해 반영과 그 영향력 강화"에 두고 구체적 활동을 전개한 조선후기의 「門中書院」은 향촌단위 사회에서 이루어지는 문중활동의 궁극적인 귀착점이기도 하였다.
Abstract
Assuming the country villige society was related closely with Seowon, the order of country villige had changed in the later term of Chosun, the noble familly(士族)'s reaction for social changes appeared by establishing Seowon. In other words, the noble families connected with political factions and power lines or sometimes they get used by them or defend themselves from danger by gathering their family power or secure their positions or reinforce it, through establishing Seowon. This fact tells us that the Seowon organization was a base camp of these local powers, and also it was not just happened that collapse of local power order(鄕案秩序) and establishing trend of Seowon around south area. As it was under this background, an establishing trend around south area had rose up which had a new special feature for Seowon organization such like controling by clan(門中化). Empowering clan's union power which was made by creat familly organization or other kind of clan organization activities, Ultimately it was an preparedness and also a method to be acknowledged their social position by using that power at the structure of country society. And Seowon was a very proper mechanism and an useful organization that could be available to work as official social oranization, although it was private organization for their own purpose.. It was the ultimate finish point of clan activites in the society of country villige level, because that was the time paying attention to developement of Seowon․Sawoo, union of famillym and religous service for their ancestors.
