한국 서원은 그동안 말기적 현상으로만 이해되어 부정적으로 평가되었다. 그러나 서원은 조선시대의 역사 전개과정, 특히 사림이라는 사회세력의 변천과정과 밀접히 연관되면서 각 시대마다 그 내용과 역할을 변화시켜 나갔다. 한국 서원의 역사는 16세기 중반 백운동서원(후에 소수서원)부터 시작되었다. 16세기 이래 향촌에서는 물론 중앙 정계에서 두각을 드러내기 시작하던 사림세력에 의해, 사림 세력의 재생산을 위한 학교이며 향촌과 중앙에서 사회, 정치 활동을 전개하는 근거지로 기능하였다. 이를 통해 많은 사림을 양성하여 정계에 공급하였고 그 결과로서 16세기 후반 마침내 집권을 실현, 이후 18세기 초까지 ‘사림의 시대’를 주도하였다. 서원은 바로 이 ‘사림의 시대’를 있게 한 모태였고, 그것을 유지시키는 핵심기구의 하나였다. 이러한 서원은 18세기 탕평이라든가 사회변동에 따른 사림세력의 쇠퇴, 몰락으로 그 역사적 사명을 끝낸 채 양반들의 문중조직으로 변모하는 모습을 보이게 된다. 사림의 공적 영역에서 벗어나 문중의 수중으로 주도권이 넘어가면서 문중의 사적인 이해관계를 위한 기구로 변화하였던 것이다. 조선후기 서원에 붙여져 온 대민착취의 소굴이란 표현은 이런 사정 속에서 이해되어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
Korean Seowon(書院, the Private Confucian Academy) has been considered as a closing phenomenon of the time, so it could not avoid a negative valuation. However, Seowon had been a key to the development and changes of Chosun, the Lee dynasty. Especially, Seowon was very closely related to Sarim, which was a highly influential organization. The history of Seowon had begun in mid 16th century, originated from Seowon of Baek Woon Dong(白雲洞書院). Since 16th century, empowered by Sarim(士林, the Literati) who had a great deal of influence on political circles, Seowon started the role as a school for cultivating ‘Sarim of influence’, and as a mecca of social and political activities. Eventually, Seowon provided a large number of Sarim to the political world. As a result, Seowon achieved to grasp the political power up to early 18th century, and this period of time was called "period of Sarim". Seowon was the very matrix of this "period of Sarim" and was one of the central organization that supported it. These Seowon end up its great duty by Tangpyung(蕩平, Impartiality) policy in 18th century and decline of Sarim following social change or down fall, and then it had transformed just as one of the clan organization of gentlemen. Seowon came out from official area of Sarim and it was under control of a clan functioning by being a private stake organization. It have to be undertood through this circumstance for the bad name, 'the lair of extraction against the commons', in later period of chosun.
