Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of postmodern changes in South Korean family, and to show that Korean family became more flexible than before in terms of family types, boundaries, scopes, gender role, and marriage norms. Discourses on the recent family changes have disputed between normal family advocators and family diversity supporters. The normal family ideology considers the family as a unit, assumes universal nuclear family, and grants nuclear family the privileged status than other various family types. On the other hands, the family diversity perspective treats various family lives equally, but simply lists diverse family types regardless of differences in social status, gender, sexuality, and so on. This study proposes an alternative concept, the family flexibility, for analyzing postmodern changes in Korean family. Family flexibility can reconstruct modern family norms regarding marriage and family, and deconstruct modern dichotomies, such as normal family vs. broken family, heterosexuality vs. homosexuality, and work vs. family.
