Abstract
This study examines the changing meaning of family formations through the trends in cohabitation and also the change in cohabiters’ socioeconomic status that affects cohabiting union before marriage in Korea. This study utilizes data from the Marriage Registration Files and covers a twenty-year period from the mid-1990s to the mid-2010s. We find that cohabitation is still a non-normative family practice even though the number of the cohabiting couples before marriage have slightly increased since 2000. For 20 years, the number of first-marriage couples who chose cohabiting unions before marriage increased while the number of remarriage couples decreased. We also find that women’s and men’s socioeconomic status affects their ability to enter unions, especially marriage. The socioeconomic status of those who choose cohabiting unions tends to be in the lower economic group in both men and women. Finally, the result that the majority of higher educated, employed women are still reluctant to choose cohabitation before marriage indicates that cohabitation is still no substitute for marriage. For now, we do not expect cohabitation to become a widespread substitute for marriage in Korea. This suggests that the attitudes towards cohabitation remain quite conservative. We require further analysis on who might choose cohabiting practice even though there is no social policy to support cohabitation in Korea. The social recognition for the rights of cohabitation can reduce the prejudice towards diverse family forms. Also, to accept various people’s intimate practices could lead to equal relational citizenship in Korea.
