가족의 다양성 수용에 영향을 미치는 요인

전통적으로 결혼과 가족제도의 당위성, 가정성(domesticity), 혈연중심의 가족주의를 강조해온 우리 사회의 특성은 인지적 측면의 가족 개념이나 정서적 측면의 가족 이미지에 비하여 규범적행동지향적 측면의 가족 가치관에 보다 많은 학문적 관심과 연구를 집중시켜왔으며, 사회의 변화와 더불어 나타나는 다양한 가족 형태를 당사자인 가족들이 어느 정도 수용하는지에 관한 연구는 매우 부족한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 서울시에 거주하는 다양한 연령층의 남녀 시민 999명을 대상으로 이들이 다양한 가족 형태를 어느 정도 수용하는지 살펴보고, 가족의 다양성 수용 정도를 예측하는 요인들이 무엇인지 파악함으로써‘가족’에 대한 현실적 논의와 함께 우리 사회 가족들의 건강성을 도모하기 위한 기초 자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면, 전반적으로 가족의 다양성에 대한 일반인들의 수용도는 보통 수준으로 나타났으며, 초혼 핵가족(intact nuclear family)을 우리 사회의 가장 전형적인 가족 형태로 수용하는 경향을 보였다. 반면 공동체가족, 확대가족, 동거커플, 독신가구, 상징적 존재인 자신의 조상에 대해서는 가족으로 규정하는 수용도가 낮게 나타났다. 한편 가족의 다양성을 수용하는 정도에 영향을 미치는 요인을 회귀분석한 결과, 연령이 많고, 학력이 높을수록, 남성보다 여성이, 그리고 수입이 많을수록 가족의 다양성에 대한 수용도가 높았으며, 독립변인의 상대적 설명력을 비교한 결과, 연령의 영향이 가장 큰 것으로 나타났다. 한편 응답자의 결혼 지위나 가족의 크기는 가족의 다양성 수용도에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났으며, 인구사회학적 특징을 통제한 후 전통적 가족주의 가치관의 영향력을 살펴본 결과, 전통적 가족주의 가치관을 가진 사람일수록 가족의 다양성을 덜 수용하는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This study, based on a survey of 999 respondents in Seoul, Korea, examines the degree to which respondents accept diverse family structures and explores the factors predicting acceptance of family diversity. The results show that the intact nuclear family is accepted as the typical normal family in urban Korea. On the contrary, the communal family, extended kin living together, homosexual couples, single households, and one's ancestors are not viewed as families. Overall, the respondents demonstrate moderate levels of acceptance of family diversity. People who are older, more educated, female, and have more family income are more likely to accept family diversity than their counterparts. Respondents from more traditional family backgrounds are less likely to accept family diversity. The conclusions and implications of these findings are discussed.
