관계절의 의미 기능에 대한 고찰

본고는 관계절의 수식 양상을 내포-외연의 관계를 중심으로 살펴봄으로써 관계절 본연의 의미 기능을 고찰하고자 하였다. 관계절은 핵어 명사의 외연이 가지는 내포에 대하여 새로운 내포로 작용함으로써 핵어 명사의 외연을 좁히는 제한적 수식을 한다. 관계절의 비제한적 수식은 핵어명사의 총칭적 의미 구현에 기여하는 경우, 총칭적이거나 한정적인 핵어명사구 앞에 놓여 부가적인 정보를 더하는 경우, 한정성을 가진 핵어 명사와 결합하여 의미적 통합을 이루지만 그 외연을 좁히지 못하는 경우 등그 양상이 다양하다. 제한적 수식과 비제한적 수식을 막론하고 관계절은핵어 명사와 내포-외연의 관계를 이루며 그 본연의 의미 기능은 핵어 명사에 대하여 내포로 작용하는 것이다.
Abstract
This paper tried to examine the original semantic function of relative clauses by examining the modification pattern of relative clauses, focusing on the relationship between intension and extension. The relative clause acts as a new intension for the intension of the extension of the head noun, thereby restricting the extension of the head noun. The non-re- strictive modification of the relative clause contributes to the im- plementation of the generic meaning of the head noun, and adds additional information for the head noun by being placed in front of a generic or definite head noun phrase, and achieves semantic integration with definite head noun but can not narrow extension of the head noun. Regardless of the restrictive and non-restrictive modification, the relative clause forms a intension-extension relationship with the head noun, and its original semantic function is to act as intension for the head noun.
