Abstract

The received view on the origins of universities claims that the uni- versity is an indigenous product of medieval Europe. Universitas was guild or corporation formed by students (Bologna) or professors and students (Paris) who came to study from abroad to protect themselves from the territoriality of local residents. It was a new system that had never existed before anywhere else. However, Makdisi distinguishes university from college, and the origin of the latter can be found in Madrasas founded from the Islamic charitable trust called waqf around the 10~12th centuries. Madrasas show in many ways similarities to European universities which began to form in the 12~13th centuries. But there is insufficient evidence that the former influenced the latter. Nevertheless, the received view faces the cricitism that it implicitly divides the external aspects related to the formation of universities and the internal aspects of leaning and education within the university, and emphasizes the external aspects while ingnoring what was actually going on in the university. In order to meet the challenge of the criticism, a holistic approach regarding the origins of uni- versities should be undertaken.
