<만석중놀이>에서 발견되는 실험영화적 특성

본 연구는 전래 그림자놀이인 <만석중놀이>가 드러내고 있는 영화적 특성 에 주목한다. 스크린, 관객, 상영이라는 현대 영화의 기본 장치들과 그 형식이 매우 유사하기 때문이다. <만석중놀이>의 이러한 영화 매체적 특성은 특히 다양한 매체와 형식을 실험하고 있는 현대 실험영화와 비교해 봄이 가능 하다. 위와 같은 연구문제를 바탕으로 <만석중놀이>가 내포하고 있는 여러 특성과 현대 실험영화가 추구하고 있는 특성의 연관성을 추론해본다. 이러한 연구작업은 현대 영화가 단지 서구에서 도래한 신기술만이 아니라, 우리 민족이 고대로부터 선험하고 있던 빛의 경험, 그림자 이미지 체험 그리고 다양한 매체 퍼포먼스 등이 만나 형성되고 팽창된 산물이라는 계보를 밝혀볼 수 도 있지 않을까 하는 질문 때문이다. 이를 위해 우선 <만석중놀이>의 형식과 내용적 측면을 고증, 분석하고, 그 결과를 현대 실험영화가 중요시하며 추구하는 특성과 비교해 그 상관성을 확인해본다. 실험영화의 특성은 선행연구들의 분석을 통해 첫째, 비내러티브와 퍼포먼스성 둘째, 전복적 주제성 셋째, 매체 융복합성의 세 가지로 도출했다. 본 연구는 <만석중놀이>가 영화다 혹은 실험영화다라고 주장하기 위함이 아니다. 다만 그 몇 가지 특성이 실험영화와 맞닿아 있고 이러한 점은 우리의 영화가 외부 충격의 산물만이 아닌 내 부적 원형에서도 기인한 측면이 있으며, 우리 선조들의 빛 경험과 체험이 매우 오래되었다는 사실을 제시해, 영화연구에 새로운 논점을 제공하기 위함이다.
Abstract
This study focuses on the cinematic characteristics which are laid out in Manseokjungnori(만석중놀이), a traditional shadow play. This is because the basic devices of modern cinemas such as screens, audience, and screenings are very similar to that of Manseokjungnori. It may be possible that we compare this film media characteristic of Manseokjungnori with modern experimental films that experiment with various media and forms. Based on these research issues, this research infers the relationship between the various characteristics of Manseokjungnori and the characteristics pursued by modern experimental films. This research is due to the question that modern films are not just new technologies from the West, but also the genealogy of the Korean people's experience of light, shadow image, and various media performances. To this end, first, I examine and analyze the format and content aspects of Manseokjungnori, and compare the results with the characteristics mainly pursued by modern experimental films to check the correlation. Through the analysis of previous studies, the characteristics of experimental films were first derived into three categories: non-narrative and performance, subversive subjectivity, and media convergence. This research work is not to argue that Manseokjungnori is a cinema or an experimental cinema. However, some of the characteristics are in contact with experimental films, and this is due to the fact that our film is not only a product of external shocks but also an internal prototype, and that our ancestors' light experiences are very old, providing a new point in film research.
