Abstract

This study critically examines the ethical and existential implications of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and subscription-based models on human subjectivity, as represented in the Netflix original series Black Mirror Season 7: Common People. The episode presents a dystopian future in which even the maintenance of life is contingent upon continuous subscription payments, reflecting how human existence becomes commodified and economically subordinated within a late-capitalist technological society. Using the methodology of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this research investigates how AI systems manipulate and exploit human autonomy and lack. The analysis focuses on three central themes: (1) the economic exploitation structure inherent in AI systems; (2) the correlation between manipulated human desire and subscription models; and (3) the erosion of subjectivity caused by escalating dependence on AI technologies. Ultimately, this study calls for the expansion of critical awareness and policy-oriented action to establish a human-centered digital ethics. It urges reflection on the sociotechnical risks embedded in the merging of technology and capital that shape our collective future.
