Abstract

This study empirically investigated the effectiveness of the ‘SUE’ technique by analyzing how the timing and strength of evidence presentation influence suspects’ perception of evidence and their confessions. Participants assigned the role of suspects were exposed to varying conditions: early vs. strategic disclosure and strong vs. weak evidence. Following the interview, their perceived strength of the evidence and confession status were measured. Results demonstrated that both the timing and strength of evidence had a significant impact on suspects’ perception, which fully mediated the relationship between these factors and the likelihood of confession. Specifically, strategically disclosed and strong evidence led suspects to perceive that investigators possessed more incriminating information, thereby increasing the likelihood of confession by altering their self-preservation strategies. These findings indicate that suspects’ decision-making processes are not solely based on internal reasoning but are cognitively affected by external stimuli such as the manner of evidence disclosure. The cognitive strain and disruption induced by strategic evidence use can trigger changes in suspects’ verbal behavior, ultimately manifesting in confessions. Thus, the structured timing and intensity of evidence presentation serve as a crucial cognitive lever in investigative interviews, offering both ethical and practical benefits in the design of interrogation strategies.
