Abstract
This study examines the fragmentary records and explanations of Korean scholars who searched for the etymology of the Korean word 'rice' in Southeast Asia based on the basic information on 'rice' that we can currently find in the literature. Sagart (2011) was reviewed for a comprehensive discussion on this. Through this, we confirmed the hypothesis that the agricultural vocabularies of Korean and Japanese were influenced by Austronesian, to which the Tai-Kadai language family belongs, among the language families of Southeast Asia. Whitman (2011) explained the relationship between Korean and Japanese based on the spread of agricultural and agricultural vocabulary.; Vovin (2015) discussed the relationship between Korean and Japanese ‘rice’.; Through Robbeets (2017a, 2017b, 2017c), a new hypothesis about the lineage of Korean and Japanese was examined, and an explanation of the relationship between Korean 'rice' and Japanese '*wasay' was reviewed.
