Abstract
Purpose, Method: Using nationally representative data from the Korean Education and Employment Panel, this study examined the relation between gender and college undermatching, which refers to a student who is attending a less selective college than his/her qualification would have permitted, and whether the association between gender and undermatching vary by region. Results: Results revealed that female students were more likely to be undermatched than male students, and this negative relation was mostly found in the group of non-metropolitan area. It indicates that, in the non-metropolitan area, female students were disadvantaged in college access even if the female students performed similarly to the male students. Conclusion: To alleviate the problem of undermatching for the female students, we proposed more proactive academic and career counseling and support for the female students to find a better-matched college based on their qualification.
