Abstract

This study investigates factors associated with the college destinations of high school graduates in Korea, using data for 2004 general high school seniors from the Korean Education and Employment Panel(KEEP). Results show that parents’ level of education and their expectations for children’s education have a significant influence on the levels of higher education and college selectivity directly or indirectly via their effects on adolescent’s academic achievement. Students' hours of study and academic achievement play a decisive role in attending a four-year college and a more selective college. School factors including sector and location make little difference. Findings suggest that Korea’s inequalities in the odds of enrollments in higher education are increasingly replaced by inequalities in the odds of placement in the more selective track. Gender differences are observed with high-achieving female students being less likely than their male counterparts to attend in a more selective college. Policy implications are discussed.
