본 논문은 1950년대-1990년대 고등교육 이수기회에 나타난 젠더와 가족배경 효과를 살펴보는 것을 연구목적으로 하였다. 가족배경에 따른 젠더 차이의 상이성, 즉 아들 중심의 교육투자가 부모의 사회경제적 지위에 따라 상이할 수 있는 가능성에 초점을 두고, 한국노동연구원의 1998년 한국노동패널 1차 자료를 사용하여 분석하였다. 부모의 사회경제적 지위는 아버지의 직업을 중심으로 5개(전문직ㆍ관리직, 사무직, 자영업, 농민, 노동자)로 구분하였다. 분석방법은 고등교육 이수를 하나의 사건으로 보는 비연속적 모델과, 고등교육 이수를 초등학교→중학교→고등학교→고등교육기관 이수의 연속적인 사건으로 보는 연속적 모델 두 가지로 구분하여 이항 로짓분석(binary logit analysis)을 사용하였다. 1950년대-1990년대 교육받은 응답자를 출생 연도를 기준으로 1943-1952년, 1953-1962년, 1963-1972년의 세 코호트로 구분하여 각각 분석한 결과, 고등교육 이수기회에서의 가족배경과 젠더 불평등이 출생 코호트별로 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 즉, 1943-1952년 출생 코호트에서는 남녀 차이가 가족의 사회경제적 지위와 상관없이 동일하지만, 이후의 두 코호트에서는 전문직ㆍ관리직 등 상층 출신 내의 젠더 격차가 농민, 노동자계급 출신보다 적었다. 이와 같은 연구 결과를 통해 본 논문은 여성의 낮은 교육 이수기회를 성별 차이로 국한하는 설명에서 발전하여 부모의 사회경제적 지위에 따른 남녀차별의 상이성을 밝힌다는 점에서 향후 젠더 연구에서 가족의 자원, 사회문화적 맥락 등의 통합적 접근의 필요성에 대한 함의를 제언하였다.
Abstract
This study examines the effect of gender and economic class on educational attainment during the 1950s-1990s. In particular, it focuses on schooling transition. Using the 1998 Korea Labor and Income Panel Survey data, this study shows that respondents from upper class families tend to transit to higher educational levels more than lower class families. In terms of gender, the probability of schooling transition is higher for men. Interestingly, the gender gap varies between cohorts and educational levels. Overall, there is no statistically meaningful interaction between gender and economic class for those from the 1943-1952 cohort in schooling transition. However, there is a significant interaction between gender and economic class for the 1953-1962 and the 1963-1972 cohorts. The gender gap is smaller for upper class families. This result implies that the gender gap in educational attainment is closely related to economic class.
