Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to examine the role of persistence in the relationship between math anxiety and math achievement. Method: For this purpose, PISA 2022 data for Korea were utilized. To test the hypotheses, we employed the latent moderated structural equation modeling (LMS) technique. Results: Findings indicated that higher levels of math anxiety were associated with lower math achievement, while higher levels of persistence were linked to higher math achievement. Furthermore, persistence was found to mitigate the negative impact of math anxiety on achievement. Conclusion: The current study suggests that persistence not only buffers the relationship between math anxiety and achievement but also contributes positively to achievement. However, the difference in math achievement depending on the persistence was more pronounced when math anxiety was low compared to when it was high. Therefore, to enhance math achievement, it is necessary to prioritize interventions addressing math anxiety reduction. Additionally, incorporating strategies to improve persistence could maximize the effectiveness of the intervention.
