Abstract

This study conducted a meta-analysis to comprehensively examine the relationship between mathematics anxiety and mathematics achievement among elementary, middle, and high school students in Korea. A total of 39 empirical studies published between 2000 and 2024 were analyzed. The overall effect size was r = -.26, indicating that higher mathematics anxiety is associated with lower mathematics achievement. Moderator analyses showed that the effect size was larger for middle school students than for high school students, and that students from non-metropolitan regions exhibited a stronger negative correlation. In contrast, differences in effect sizes by gender or by type of mathematics-anxiety measure were not statistically significant. Funnel plot and Egger’s test indicated no evidence of publication bias. These findings suggest that the strength of the mathematics anxiety and mathematics achievement relationship varies with educational context and underscore the need to improve learning environments―particularly for middle school and non-metropolitan students―to mitigate the adverse impact of mathematics anxiety on achievement.
