이 글은 뒤르케임, 부르디외, 그리고 에르비외-레제의 사회학적 관점으로 현대한국개신교회 안팎의 모습을 조명하는 글이다. 이를 통해 오늘날 한국개신교회의모습과 “가나안성도” 현상으로 대표되는 교회 바깥의 현상을 인식하는데 도움을 받을 수 있다. 뒤르케임의 집단의식에 초점을 맞추어, 한국개신교회의 모임에서 볼수 있는 강한 연대감과 내외집단 구분의 특징을 조명하고, 소위 교회 바깥에 위치하고 있는 소속 없는 신앙인들과 기성 교인들 간에 증가될 차이를 생각해 본다. 또한, 부르디외의 아이디어를 통해, 한국인들과 한국교회 구성원들의 사고와 행동에 깊이 자리 잡고 있는 유교 아비투스를 생각해 보면서, 그것이 상징자본 형성에기여하여 교회 조직과 결정에 영향을 끼칠 수 있다는 사실을 조명한다. 아울러, 에르비외-레제의 아이디어를 따라, 근대화의 영향으로 교회 중심 전통이 사회 속으로 흩어졌다고 보지만, 유럽의 경우와 달리, 기독교역사가 짧은 등의 이유로오늘날 한국교회 안팎에 흩어 존재하는 집단기억이 부족하다고 생각한다.
Abstract
This article explores the features of Korean Protestant churches in the twenty-first century from the perspectives of Durkheim, Bourdieu, and Hervieu-Léger. In so doing, this study helps one delineate the characteristics both inside and outside Korean Protestant churches. In Durkheimian terms, such as “collective consciousness,” the article deals with solid solidarity among church members in Korean Protestant churches. It also sheds light on distinctions drawn between inside and outside the churches, including the differences between church members and “believers without belonging,” Christians without church attendance. This article also delineates the feature of Korean churches and their members in the so-called Confucian habitus inculcated in their thoughts and actions. In so doing, it is revealed that Confucian habitus enables church members to form symbolic capital that influences church organizations and systems. Likewise, in Hervieu-Léger’s view, this article explores the disintegration and diffusion of collective memory in modern societies, resulting mainly from the emergence and development of modernity. Unlike churches in Europe, however, Korean Protestant churches are relatively new in Korean society and have failed to accumulate enough “collective memory” to be shared among Koreans inside and outside their churches.
