Abstract
This paper was a study on the 19 Jaboksa temples belonging to three minor sects of all 88 Jaboksa temples in the reign of Taejong(太宗), in the early Joseon period. It grasped the real facts of the 19 Jaboksa temples each along with the substance of minor sects and the trends and changes in Buddhism of the early Josoen dynasty. The studies of the early Joseon Buddhist history were mostly concentrated in the suppressing policy of Buddhism for a long while, but this study investigated another aspects of the Joseon period Buddhism through minor sects and affiliated temples reorganized by the state. The 19 Jaboksa temples consisted of 8 temples of Jungsingjong (中神宗) sect, 8 temples of Chongnamjong(摠南宗) sect, 3 temples of Sihuengjong(始興宗) sect, and they were relatively evenly distributed throughout the country, except for Hamgildo Province and Pyeongando Province. The 8 temples of Jungsingjong sect, which Jungdojong(中道宗) sect and Sininjong(神印宗) sect were integrated into, were mostly built in the Silla era and distributed in the 3 south provinces, most of them were ruined during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. The 8 temples of Chongnamjong sect, which Jungdojong(中道宗) sect and Sininjong(神印宗) sect were integrated into, were temples mainly of the Goryeo(高麗) era and be influenced by Seon Buddhist temples. The 3 temples of only Chongnamjong sect were the fewest temples, but were distributed in a relatively large area, and there is little contents to which people have access. The 19 Jaboksa temples belonging to three minor sects were planned according to the country’s Buddhist policy, and ever since the reign of Taejong, tendencies and characteristics of each sect have been gradually tarnished.
