다산 수양론에서 인심도심론의 위상

이 논문은 다산 정약용의 인심도심론이 그의 수양론 전반에서 어떠한 위상을 지니는가를 검토한 것이다. 다산은 심의 작용으로 다양하게 일어나는 모든 마음을 인심·도심으로 이분화하였다. 이 두 마음을 예비 악과 예비 선이라는 가치적으로 대립하는 관계로 파악하여 선·악과 공·사가 모두 이 두 마음으로부터 비롯한다고 규정하였다. 또한, 악의 발생 원인을 양심의 함닉과 인심의 문제로 인식함으로써 인심·도심은 수양 공부의 기본축을 이루었다. 이로써 도심의 배양을 뜻하는 ‘솔성率性’과 인심의 제재를 뜻하는 ‘치심治心’이 다산수양론의 기본 구조를 이루게 된다. 그러므로 다산의 인심도심론은 신독·집중과 같은 단지 하나의 공부론이 아니라 그의 수양론 전반을 아우르는 총체적인 성격으로서의 위상을 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 다산이 새로운 해석을 통해 제시한 신독·충서·극기·집중 공부와 대체소체론 등은 모두 인심·도심을 어떻게 할 것인가의 문제로 귀결됨을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 서경 「대우모」의 “人心惟危, 道心惟微, 惟精惟⼀, 允執厥中”에 대한 주자의 해석을 비판하며 ‘인심유위, 도심유미’와 ‘유정유일’, ‘윤집궐중’은 서로 연결성이 없다고 주장하였다. 하지만, 인심·도심에 대한 이러한 진술의 요지는 수양의 요체라고 극찬하며 존숭하는 태도를 보였다. 이는 인심·도심에 대한 다산의 수양론적 인식이 주자와 매우 다르며, 다산이 인심·도심의 문제에 대해 매우 중요한 가치를 두고 있다는 것을 시사한다. 이러한 점들을 통해 다산의 인심도심론이 「대우모」의 16자를 기반으로 한 하나의 공부론이 아니라 그의 수양론 전반을 구성하는 총체적인 성격을 띤다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
This study examines the status of Tasan (茶⼭) Jeong Yak-yong (丁若鏞)’s Human mind and Moral mind theory in his overall theory of cultivation. Tasan divides all minds, which occurs in various ways due to the action of heart-mind, into Human mind (人心) and Moral mind (道心). He regarded the two parts of minds as the value-contradictory relationship between pre-good and pre-evil, and defined that good and evil and public and private originate from these two parts of minds. Also, by understanding the cause of evil as the problem of Human mind and losing conscience, the Human mind and Moral mind became the basic axis of his cultivation study (⼯夫). Accordingly, ‘Solseong (率性)’ which means the cultivation of Moral mind and ‘Chisim (治心)’ which means the control of Human mind form the basic structure of Tasan’s cultivation theory. Therefore, Tasan’s theory of the Human mind and Moral mind is not just a theory for cultivation, but it has a status as a general character that encompasses the whole of his cultivation theory. It reveals that Sindok (愼獨), Chungseo (忠恕), Geukgi (克己), Jibjung (執中), and Daeche-Soche theory (大體小體論), which Tasan suggested through his new interpretation, bring to a conclusion about what to do with Human mind and Moral mind. Also, he criticized Zhu Xi’s interpretation of “人心惟危, 道心惟微, 惟精惟⼀, 允執厥中 (Human mind is dangerous, Moral mind is subtle. Only when you should observe it and keep it constantly, you could truly seize the mean)” in 「Daewoomo (大禹謨)」 of the Documents (書經), and claimed that ‘人心惟危, 道心惟微’ and ‘惟精惟⼀’, ‘允執厥中’ is not interrelated. However, he put the high value on the statement regarding the Human mind and Moral mind as the essence of cultivation. This suggests that Tasan’s understanding of cultivation is different from that of Zhu-xi and that he puts great importance and value on the matter of the Human mind and Moral mind. Through these points, it may be confirmed that Tasan’s Human mind and Moral mind theory is not just a theory based on the sixteen characters of 「Daewoomo」, but it has a comprehensive characteristic that consists of the overall part of his cultivation theory.
