Abstract

This study sheds light on the scholarly life and academic tendencies of Nan-gok Kim Gang-han (⾦江漢, 1719~1779), who was active in Yongnam in the 18th century. In addition to his writings, Literary Collections of Master Nan-gok’s Works (蘭⾕先生文集) and Collective Works of Nan-gok (蘭⾕集), as well as the works and writings of his acquaintances, such as Jesan Kim Seong-tak, Gusadang Kim Nak-haeng, Noae Yu Dowon, Dong-am Yu Jang-won, and Daesan Lee Sangjeong this study examines. And this study looks into his research achievements on Neo-confucianism and his contemporary evaluations on him. And in order to understand his academic background, this study also reviewed his life and fellowship, and the process of compiling literature. Accordingly, the research results of Nan-gok Kim Gang-han could be summarized into four areas: practical thoughts on Neo-Confucianism, the theory of manifestation on the Four-seven theory, evidential research and interpretation of funerary rites, and evidential research on Toegye’s letters. It was confirmed that his academic insight was trusted to the extent that he was mentioned heavily in Evidential Research on Master Toegye’s Literary Collection and Comprehensive Study on Immutable Rites and Mutable rites.
