한국고전종합DB를 활용한 연표 시각화 도구 개발

Abstract

Until now, materials related to the humanities have been primarily provided through search-oriented services. However, visualizing research papers and academic materials in a timeline format can greatly facilitate the understanding of the overall flow and enhance objectivity in research. This is especially useful for organizing literary history in which multiple characters appear simultaneously. By utilizing the database provided by the Korean Classics DB, it is possible to automate the process without manual transcription. In this paper, we propose the development of a web-based timeline visualization tool, which includes data from the Korean Classics DB and other humanities materials. To validate the logical feasibility of the tool’s development, a prototype of timeline visualization tool and provided examples of its usage. The proposed web-based timeline visualization tool is JavaScript-centric and therefore, it can be applied to various server environments and standardized as software. Furthermore, utilizing this tool for research would make it possible to perform more objective analysis of research materials, easy visualize information, and identify errors in the original data. We demonstrated the utilization of this tool for research materials through examples using Korean literary history papers, event networks in the Korean Classics DB, the family tree of Shim Ik-Woon, a writer of minor poems from the late Joseon period, and original texts by Kim Yun-Sik from the late Joseon period. This process made evident that the tool facilitates the identification of data errors and demonstrated the need for cross-validation among search systems that provide services. This tool can also be used to verify the accuracy of humanities materials and identify potential issues.
