Abstract

Various dictionaries on traditional Korean culture and scholarship have been published. These dictionaries have been referred to as “dictionaries for Korean studies” and considered dictionaries focused on themes in Korean studies under the category of “dictionaries of humanities.” Dictionaries on traditional Korean culture and scholarship are very diverse, reflecting the variety of subject matters of Korean studies. Even if such terms as “dictionary for Korean studies” or “dictionaries of humanities” appear self-evident at first glance, these terms make it difficult to estimate the specific form of the dictionary or the scope of information provided in such dictionaries, except that the main content of the dictionary is Korean Studies or Humanities. This issue relates to the lexicographical classification of dictionaries, design, and planning for dictionary making. This paper argues that dictionaries on traditional Korean culture and scholarships do not need to be bound by the form of existing standardized dictionaries and that they should find “hybrid” forms and compilation methods through the analysis and selection of various existing linguistic and non-linguistic dictionaries. In addition, this paper discusses the “Knowledge Management System (KMS)” that a dictionary on Korean traditional culture and scholarships should consider in the changing environment, considering the recent general increase in preference for online and digital media that are advantageous for delivery and promotion as well as the emergence of “digital humanities.” A KMS enables users to save, edit, and share the knowledge that is continuously produced in the translation and research of Sino-Korean literature, and can further contribute to education and research.
