『한국문화 국영문 사전』의 구성과 주제 범주에 관한 이론적 재고찰

해외 한국학교육의 수요는 지속적으로 증가해 왔다. 그런데 수요의 상당량이 기초 지식 토대 구축의 필요성을 여전히 실감하게 한다. 전문성 높은 특수 한국학 지식 교육의 외연이 아직 괄목할 만큼 성장하지 않은 까닭이다. 더욱이, 한국학 분야에서 언어와 문화 부문의 관심 증대가 선명하게 포착된다. 이는 한국학으로의 유입 인구가 양적으로 팽창하고 있으나, 상당수의 학습자가 한국학 초심자로 간주될 수 있음을 방증한다. 그에 따라, 이들의 요구를 충족할 기초 공구서의 확보가 여전히 갈급 대상이라는 점이 충분히 감지된다. 『한국문화 국영문 사전』은 이상의 정황 속에서 기획⋅편찬되었다. 전문성과 특수성보다 대중성과 범용성을 더욱 유념하여 제작된 사전이다. 한국학중앙연구원의 32개 사전 편찬 사업에서 인문 분야, 기초 수준, 통합적 성격, 일반론적 층위의 면에서 거의 유일한 한국학 자료 구축 사업이었다. 본 연구는, 『한국문화 국영문 사전』 사업을 마무리하는 현시점에, 사전의 기획과 설계를 재검하며 새로이 발견되고 강조되는 의의를 밝힘으로써 본 사전의 의미를 재해석하는 데 일조하고자 한다. 본 연구에서 주목하는바, 완성된 『한국문화 국영문 사전』은 문화에 관한 기저 지식이 개념적 지식과 대부분 맞물릴 수밖에 없음을 더욱 표면화하는 한편, 표제어 기술((記述)들을 통해 당대성에 관한 이론적 지향을 선명하게 만들어 주고 있다. 덧붙여, 한국문화를 포괄하기 위한 전략 중 하나로 마련된 6개 주제 범주는 사전의 내용 사이 교집합 발생을 허용하는 수렴의 장소이자 문화 처소로 진화하였다고 이해될 수 있다. 이상을 논의하는 가운데 본 연구는 『한국문화 국영문 사전』의 가치 이해를 더욱 풍부히 하고, 한국학 지식 사전의 향후 과제에 시사점을 남길 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The demand for overseas Korean studies education has been steadily increasing. However, it would not be an exaggeration to say that most of the demand still requires the establishment of fundamental knowledge. This is because specialized Korean studies with high expertise have yet to grow into a remarkably popular field abroad. Nevertheless, the increasing interest in the Korean language and the cultural literacy aspects of Korean studies is clearly evident. This indicates that while the number of people entering the field of Korean studies is expanding quantitatively, many learners can still be considered beginners. Accordingly, securing foundational reference materials to meet their needs remains a pressing issue. Korean-English Encyclopedia of Korean Culture was planned and compiled in this context. It was designed with greater emphasis on accessibility and general applicability than on professional or specialized knowledge. Among the 32 encyclopedia compilation projects undertaken by the Academy of Korean Studies(AKS), this was one of the few that focused on the humanities, at an introductory level, with an integrated and general perspective. As Korean-English Encyclopedia of Korean Culture comes to a close, this study aims to reinterpret its value by re-examining its design and elucidating the newly discovered significance. The completed Korean-English Encyclopedia of Korean Culture highlights the inherent interconnection between foundational knowledge about culture and conceptual knowledge. Furthermore, through the descriptions of its entries, the encyclopedia clarifies its theoretical orientation toward contemporaneity. In addition, the six thematic categories, devised as a strategy to encompass Korean culture, can be understood as evolving into Sites of Convergence and ‘cultural loci’ that allow intersections among the contents of the encyclopedia. Through those discussions, this study seeks to deepen the understanding of Korean-English Encyclopedia of Korean Culture and offer insights for the future advancement of knowledge-based encyclopedias in the field of Korean studies.
