Abstract

This study was focused to discuss the definition and actual process of Korean manuscript editing based on the case of compilation of English edition of Korean Modern Publications Encyclopedia. When translating an existing Korean studies encyclopedia for foreigners, the information contained in the items should be easily released based on the perspective of a foreign reader with limited background knowledge on Korea, and an explanation of major proper nouns should be added. Sentence structure needs to be changed to facilitate translation into English. Responsible for this process is the stage of editing Korean manuscripts. In this study, we looked at the relevant information to be referred to in the Korean manuscript editing stage, which was newly established as an independent compilation stage, and summarized how the Korean manuscript editing was implemented. First, I looked at the background knowledge of overseas Korean studies majors and researchers who were assumed to be the main readers of the Korean Modern Publications Encyclopedia. Regarding the issue of correspondence with the original text, 'cultural translation', which is emerging as a higher-level concept related to translation in Korean studies, is reviewed, accepted as a conceptual tool to overcome the political hierarchy between cultures, and adheres to the sentences of the original Korean text, it was confirmed that active proofreading is necessary according to the judgment of the editor. Based on this academic background, the Korean Modern Publications Encyclopedia sets the level of standard readers in order to establish standards to be applied consistently in all processes of compilation, such as writing and profiling, translation, and proofreading, and while based on this, the need for creative transformation to accommodate Korean studies based on the cultural background of readers was presented by citing examples.
