한류는 ‘문화와 문화의 만남’에 의한 일종의 사회문화 현상인 것이다. 문화들의 만남은 교류와 교섭, 그리고 절충과 융합의 과정을 거치게 된다. 한류는 한국 대중문화를 통해 다른 국가에 한국의 문화 이미지를 만들고, 제고해 가는 생산적 흐름으로 파악할 수 있다. 그런데 그러한 한류의 활황은 지금도 지속되고 있는가. 한류의 침체를 보이는 징후들이 나타나면서 대내적인 반성과 성찰의 움직임이 개진되고 있다. 이런 변화된 환경에 문제의식을 두고, 침체 국면을 ‘위기가 아닌 기회’로 재점화시킬 필요성과 현실적 대안을 제시할 당위적 요구를 맞이하게 되었다. 최종적으로 효과적인 작용이 나타나도록 하기 위해서는 ‘나만의 문화’를 강조할 것이 아니라 ‘상호 문화의 이해’를 전제로 해야 한다. 명백한 현실론으로서 ‘진정한 문화소통을 향한 틀’의 확장으로 나아가야 한다는 점이다. 이 글에서는 이렇게 개념화되어 있는 한류가 필리핀(Republic of the Philippines)이라는 동남아 국가에서는 실제적으로 어떻게 전개․작용되고 있는가를 살펴보며, 그것을 통해 필리핀 한류의 특성은 어떻게 나타나고 있는가를 규명해 본다. 즉 ‘필리핀에서의 한류의 어제와 오늘’에 대한 인문학적 성찰로 접근하여 한류 일반에 대한 인식의 지평을 넓혀 보려는 것이다. 일정기간 광풍처럼 몰아닥쳤던 한류열풍의 오늘날 현상은 이미 전성기를 넘어섰다는 비판론이 우세한 시각이다. 그런 시각을 긍정적으로 수용하면서 한류는 미래에도 지속가능성을 담보하고 있는지를 중점적으로 제시해 보고자 한다. 이것이 바로 이 글의 동기이며 목적이다.
Abstract
Hanryu(Korean Wave) is a sort of socio-cultural phenomenon caused by the interactions between the two different cultures. One culture's contacting with other cultures must undergo such processes as interactions, negotiations, and fusion. Hanryu can be understood as a productive cultural trend of Korean mass-culture reevaluating and remaking its mass-culture in other countries. However, it is questionable whether or not Hanryu still works well. Rather, the symptoms that Hanryu doesn't work quite well can be found in various respects so that many Korean people are worried about that nowadays. To cope with this situation, which means the decline of Hanryu in other countries, we need to provide a solution. To do so, I claim that we should emphasize understanding mutual cultures, rather than forcing other countries to figure out our own culture. In other words, Hanryu should be extended to real culture-communications among all nations, if it works well in other countries. On the basis of the concept of Hanryu mentioned above, I explore how it works in the Republic of the Philippines, one of the countries in Southeast Asia, and then study the characteristics of Hanryu in that country. The significance of this research is to capture the generalizations on Hanryu through studying so-called "Hanryu in the Republic of the Philippines in the past and the present" with the methodology of Humanities. Though it is widely accepted that the trend of Hanryu is not predominant culturally any more, this paper tries to think about whether or not the trend of Hanryu can be continued in the future. This is the ultimate purpose of this paper.
