Abstract
This study attempts to analyze the changes in the social movements in the Philippines since the democratic transition in 1986. Social movements in the post-authoritarian or post-democratization stage have shown two different trends: newly emerging citizen's movements and traditional protest movements. Many observers reported that the former have made a remarkable development, while the latter have shown a sign of stagnation and weakening. For the last 20 years since the 1986 people power revolution, a multiplicity of 'new social movements' or 'citizen's movements'―such as environmental movements, human rights movements, peace movements, women's movements, and anti-globalization movements―emerged and blossomed. But on the contrary, traditional protest movements largely led by progressive social forces (esp. by national democrats) have been deteriorated. This study attempts to explain the rise of new social movements and the fall (or relative weakening) of traditional protest movements in the post-democratization Philippines in two different dimensions: the 'differentiation' of social movements, on the one hand, and the 'political opportunity structures' that provide either favorable or unfavorable conditions for the social movements, on the other.
