Abstract
This study explores the possible causes for religious (especially Christian) revival and growing vitality of the religious community in contemporary China. I will shed light on the characteristics of a transitional society from a socialist government to a capitalist market economy, while examining whether China is suitable to be classified under the so-called “new paradigm” in the sociology of religion with the declining secularization theory. I highlight four factors that account for the current Christian growth in China under communist rule: first, the dramatic rise of early Christianity under the persecution of the Roman Empire—as pointed out in Rodney Stark’s famous work (1996)—which is comparable to the persecution and martyrdom during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976); second, the ideological role of Chinese Protestantism while the country transitions from socialism to capitalism, according to the Max Weber’s thesis on the ideological effects of religion; third, the affinity between free market economy (capitalism) and Protestant Christianity (especially evangelicalism and charismatic/Pentecostal Christianity), considering the emergence of Chinese ‘Boss Christians’, and the history of Protestantism promoting capitalism; fourth, the intriguing relationship between utopian communism (as a pseudo religion), the personality cult of Mao Zedong, and theistic utopian Christianity, which deserves further examination,
