Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the trade specialization structure of the automobile industry between Japan and Germany and the export competitiveness of Japanese automobiles to Germany with the Japanese-EU EPA, which took effect in February 2019, and to derive implications for the Korean automobile industry. As a result, Japanese automobiles are dominated by almost absolute export specialties in international trade, but in trade with Germany, which produces global premium brand automobiles, they were classified as import specialties and their competitiveness was continuously weakening. Nevertheless, it was predicted that the Japanese automobiles will be able to switch from import-specialized items to export-specialized items by securing price competitiveness due to the elimination of tariffs of the Japanese-EU EPA in force. Therefore, the Korean government and the automobile industry should prepare a multifaceted countermeasure against the export competition that will become fierce in Europe and Germany with the Japanese-EU EPA. In particular, in order to secure sustainable niche market in the German automobile market, it is urgently necessary to revise the track to specialize in exporting high-quality, high-value-added economy cars and small cars and specialize in electric and hydrogen vehicles rather than the existing low-priced small car export strategy. Meanwhile, in order to image Korean automobiles as high-quality brands and Korea as advanced countries in automobile technology, it is considered that it is necessary to pursue diversification of export items through cutting-edge of core parts materials, modules and systems, and acquisition of international certification marks.
