Abstract
What is the relations between securing a 'goestrategic crucial space' in Northeast Asia and Japan's challenge to the status quo. What is the impact of 'geography' in offense-defense theory on the change of offense-defense balance? What is the explanation for the Japan's challenge in the cases of the Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War? This research addresses these questions and illuminates the offense-defense theory in terms of 'geography,' or more concretly, geostrategy. Here, 'geostrategic crucial space' means the area that can give comparable strategic advantages to a state in terms of offense and defense, if secured. All states can have such crucial space that is imperitive for their security whether it is a neighboring state or a peripheral area, which influence the changes of the offense-defense balance against their competitors. I will make fore hypotheses from the offense-defense theory, and analyse cases of the Sino-Japanese war and the Russo-Japanese war to evaluate those hypotheses. My argement is "if vulnerability of a defensive state in terms of offense-defense balance with regards to the geostrategic crucial space increases, then the possibility of challenging the status quo increases." This research shows that offense-defense theory has explanatory power in terms of 'geography' even though most debates on the theory have focused on 'technology.'
