Abstract
City is a tapestry woven by strands of latitudes of space and longitudes of time. By latitude, it is more than sum of people, institutions and settlements. It is rather understood as a place cum cumulative process articulated by myriad decision-makings of human beings revolving around political, socioeconomic, cultural, and religious activities. By longitude, it is seen as a reservoir of time. Urban landscape would be reasonably grasped through the lens of historical processes, and then more legiable for obtaining its representative as well as symbolic meanings. In the sense, when viewed from a singular perspective or discipline, our comprehension on the city is likely to remain crippled or at least biased. By the same coin, the risk of biased urban perception is also raised by overlooking time dimension, particularly in case of mega-cities which have grown up and been transformed over the long history of human prosperity. This initiates the very necessity of historic as well as inter-disciplinary approach in urban studies. Krung Thep (Bangkok), since it had emerged as the capital city of Rattanakosin Dynasty in 1782, has strengthened its role and status as the epicenter for political, economic, social and cultural developments in Thailand. This paper employs an inter-disciplinary approach in order to understand how Bangkok has been transformed and evolved with changes in circumstances internal as well as external during the modernization period of Thailand. For the purpose, it highlights such concepts as king-centered polity, international trading with immigration, and nationalistic modernization.
