Abstract

When the Thai elite discussed the modernization of Thailand and pursued modernization reforms from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, they were cognizant of that traditional elements were to be overcome or abolished on the one hand, and regarded some traditional elements as indispensable for the construction of modern Thailand the other hand in terms of its form and substance. Modern Thailand was formed by the relations between Thailand and the West, more concretely, by influences from the West and reactions by the Thai to them. Such reactions, that the Thai elite showed between the latter half of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, were resulted from their strong attachment to two traditional elements, kingship and Buddhism. In case of King Rama V, it was manifested in the reform of educational system, and in case of King Rama Ⅵ, it was expressed in his perception of national identity. Rama V stressed that the reform of modernization should be, in some cases, carried out not in the Western way but in the Thai traditional way. Rama Ⅵ criticized that the Thai society blindly imitated and followed Western civilization and institutions related to democracy. Thus, the modernity pursued and achieved by the Thai elite since the reign of King Rama V is not a European modernity but that of Thailand as an alternative.
