Abstract
This paper focused on the processes and implications related to the establishment of the national emblem of India from 1947 to 1950. The motif of the national emblem, formally adopted on 26 January 1950, was based on the lions of capital adorning the stone pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka. Newly independent India's national symbols, such as national flag, national anthem, national emblem, were adopted under the leadership of the first Prime Minister, Nehru. Among others, the enactment of the national emblem was close to Nehru's sole decision and it was based on Nehru's long-standing interest and affection for Ashoka. For Nehru, Ashoka and his governance were not only suggesting the direction of the newly independent government of India but also a constant reminder of what it had to do. Nehru saw that all the answers to India's biggest problem at the time of independence could be found in Ashoka's rule. In particular, at a time when religious conflicts continued due to the separation of India-Pakistan and the subsequent influx of refugees, the most special part of Ashoka's teachings for Nehru was related to secularism. Nehru used Ashoka's symbol both for the national flag and emblem, which was intended to symbolize India’s future goal as a secular and pluralistic state free from any particular religion. Nehru, meanwhile, was keenly interested in international relations, another important issue facing independent India. Under the Cold War which began in earnest after World War II, Nehru hoped that India would maintain a certain distance from the two power blocs and form an independent international relations in the world politics. To this end, Nehru introduced the concept of non-alliance as the basic principle of India’s foreign policy even before independence, and declared that India would serve as a peacekeeper or peacemaker in the international community. The basis for this argument was an internationalist aspect of the Ashoka eara, not only based on the message of non-violence, peace and tolerance, but also sought to spread the messages to the world. The most visually integrating the identity of the state directed by independent India was to reaffirm the ancient ideals of peace, non-violence, and tolerance. It was a kind of pledge to protect equality and social justice in all areas of the lives of the Indian people, and can be seen as a 20th-century version of Ashoka pillar, which contains Nehru's desire to be a peacemaker for the world.
