Abstract

This study examined the preparation and execution of the 1st Asian Games, held in New Delhi from March 4 to 11, 1951, as well as the role and implications of this event during the early stages of nation-building in independent India. In the post-World War II period, when the process of decolonization was gaining momentum, India was the country that most actively emphasized the need for Asian unity and solidarity, with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at its center. Appointed as the head of the Indian National Congress’s foreign affairs in the late 1920s, Nehru accumulated extensive diplomatic experience and, despite the extreme vulnerability of the newly independent nation, pursued a grand vision of establishing India as a country that prioritized peace and solidarity in a rapidly changing world order, particularly as a leader in Asian integration. To achieve this, Nehru undertook various initiatives based on internationalism and pan-Asianism. Meanwhile, inspired by Nehru’s vision and activities, Indian sports administrators began planning the Asian Games with an expanded regional scope covering the entire continent. Nehru, convinced that sports could serve as a crucial platform for Asian integration and solidarity, expressed his deep interest and full support. However, India’s domestic situation at the time posed multiple obstacles to the smooth preparation of the Games, including religious conflicts and the massive refugee crisis resulting from the India–Pakistan partition. Despite these challenges, the Indian government and sports administrators successfully organized the 1st Asian Games, which were attended by 11 countries, including the host nation. Through this event, India was able to build a positive image as a country that led Asian unity and solidarity based on pan-Asianism and, further, sought to contribute to world peace based on internationalist principles. Moreover, the Games marked the starting point of a continental multi-sport event representing the Asian region, playing a significant role in shaping Asian identity and promoting regional cooperation that continues to this day. Furthermore, the Games vividly reflected the vision and actions of India’s leaders during the nation-building process, making this topic a research subject of considerable value for future reinterpretation from multiple perspectives.
